Breakdancing and Street Art in Barcelona

Breakdancing and Street Art in Barcelona

I rarely do a blog post on Indy Hip Hop World AND my Radiogirl Blog, but here's a topic that's relevant to both blogs: breakdancing! And frankly, I'm strapped for time and wanted to get some fresh content up in here.

My recent trip to Barcelona and Madrid confirmed for me just how global hip hop is: the favor and vibe is everywhere and thankfully, it's not just that watered down, commercial ish that's saturating the market.

So peep this breakdancing team (along with a few pics of some street art) in this slideshow. Unfortunately, there's no music, so cut me some slack hip hoppers. kfox.

The Rap Songs Of The Arab Spring

A few weeks back I wrote about some of the protest songs that have come out of the #Jan25 revolution in Egypt. But as the revolutions have spread across the Middle East, so has the need for music to document the movement.

Here's a short piece on the music and the movement from NPR:
The Rap Songs Of The Arab Spring : The Record : NPR

Check out Egypt Protest Songs on YouTube

And this article on Arab Spring Music.

As we move from Spring into Summer ... the heat is on hip hoppers ... all over the world. kfox.

Yemeni Rappers

I'm all about the international love for hip hop. This CNN story about Yemeni rappers is a bit formulaic, but the focus of the story remains the same: I got a story to tell, give me the mic!

Time to make some progress hip hoppers ... kfox.

International Hip Hop :: The Alison Edition

A few weeks ago, I took a group trip to Siwa, Egypt. It was an interesting 9-10 hour bus ride w/about 20 people. They were, mostly, a nice group, but at times I felt as if I'd been dumped in a reality TV show. The good thing is, I met some folks who I'll keep in touch w/for life. Like Alison.

At some point, I mentioned that I have a hip hop blog and that I was interested in expounding my international hip hop repertoire. There were a good amount of recommendations and I probably remember about two of them.

But that Alison, she's a bright one. She sends me an email (with links) and says 'hey, check out these folks on the international hip hop front'. Who does that? All I know is ... I likes folks who follow up. So, here it is: Alison's International Hip Hop Edition.

Dutch
Deazy ft Yes-R: "Medicijn"

Ethiopian
Teddy Yo: "(Not sure of the title)"

French
Youssoupha: "Anti-Vénus"
Korean
1tym, se7en, wheesung: "Wild Wild West"

Okay hip hoppers, what's on your global hip hop playlist? kfox.

Hip Hop is Global :: Los Aldeanos

The beauty of hip hop is that it's the voice of the people. It's the stories of underrepresented communities. That's what you get w/Los Aldeanos.

Check out the duo in this long form video. Love the beat. Love to hear them speak in detail about their passion for hip hop. I only watched this video, but I am anxious to check out the rest of their project. Nice vid too. Thanks for the subtitles.

See full report...

Hip hoppers, even if you can't get out of your hood, you can be inspired by someone else's ... kfox.
