Mick Boogie's "The Honor Roll" Mixtape

So I finally got around to actually seeing the 2008 VH1 Hip Hop Honors. It was cool. Not as hypie as I thought it would be or could be, but I'm always down w/honoring the pioneers. It was funny too because I ended up watching the show @ my parents house. The show came on @ midnight and my mom was still up. She insisted on turning the channel; I insisted that I desperately needed to see this show. She let me have my way and minutes later was seen dancing to Cypress Hill ... whaaaadd? Yeah, apparently my mom gets down like that.

So dj Mick Boogie put together a mixtape in the same spirit as the Hip Hop Honors - The Honor Roll. This is something fly; for real. I did not know what to expect. He'd been teasing it via his Twitter account and on his blog, Press Play Fashion Forward. But that did not give me any indication of what I was in for.

It is a meld of new school meets old - some newer artists taking on the classics and not just musically as you get w/the actual program, no, these folks bring their own bag of lyricism and swagger. I could get down w/this from a issue/volume perspective. Bring it own. I like "The Show" as well as an homage to Too Short. Oh, and it's narrated by MC Serch. What a treat.

I could go on and on, but the good news is that this baby is available for your listening pleasure. And at the ever popular cost of zero dollars and cents (that'd be zero Euros too). Find the love @ his PPFF blog.

So get to downloading hip hoppers, share the love and let me know what you think. kfox.

MARK YOUR CALENDER for Oct. 6 - VH1Hip Hop Honors

It's the VH1 Hip Hop Honors on Monday, October 6, 2008 @ 10 p.m. Awesome except I don't have cable and I will be feenin to hear/see the show. I'm trying to figure out a remedy for that.

The honorees are:
  • Cypress Hill
  • De La Soul
  • Naughty by Nature
  • Slick Rick
  • Too Short
Meanwhile, you can do some voting like best webbie - I want to cast my vote for Okayplayer since that's how I stay afloat.

Oh, and Mick Boogie is supposed to be droppin some crazy, awesome, ridiculous VH1 Honors Mixtape ... I'll keep you posted on that.

Nothing like salutin the old heads ... stay true hip hoppers, kfox.

Miss Rap Supreme

Has anyone else watched this show on VH-1? Ego Trips Miss Rap Supreme? I don't watch it regularly and I can't say that I've watched an entire show, but I have definitely seen the end of the show when someone is eliminated and they have to leave the house. That is hilarious - the unique ways they tell the women to "step off". Classic.

Now, don't ask me about the level of talent on the show. But I love it when a female emcee can spit rhymes like the best in the bunch. Unfortunately, we have not really been blessed w/a dearth of quality female emcees. Usually they last for one single, maybe two then ... gone.

Oh, but I do like M.C. Serch and Yo-Yo as hosts of the show.

VH1 Hip Hop Honors - The Back Story

This is old news, but I am just now getting around to recapping (after watching a weeks worth of repeats of the VH1 Hip Hop Honors show).

The short story is the screed that is playing out on the interweb about Lupe Fiasco and A Tribe Called Quest and Q-Tip in particular. Nothing like a little bit o' hip hop drama.

Following this situation is not my strong suit ... So I point you to those who get paid to follow the histronics.

VH1 Hip Hop Honors

The VH1 Hip Hop Honors show aired on where else, VH1 (actually it could be on another channel ... heck I wouldn't be surprised to see it repeat on another cable channel in the future).

This year's honorees are:

A Tribe Called Quest

Snoop Dogg

Missy Elliott

Whodini

New Jack Swing

Wild Style

It leaves me a bit underwhelmed, but I tuned in to see what was up ... you should have done the same hip hoppers.

It was all good. I was feeling it ... mostly because I am old school and I remember those songs and dances and clothes like it was just last week.
