Ghostface Killah & Doom "Chinatown Wars"

I must admit that I like Ghostface Killah. I've blogged about his music on several occasions. What's not to like about Tony Starks? So when he's involved in a project, it gets my attention.

I don't do video games, not a personal boycott or anything, just not something I'm doing w/my spare time. But I will check out the music to video games. Yeah, sign me up for that. I saw Ghostface Killah's name attached to the latest installment of "Grand Theft Auto - Chinatown Wars". I got all excited.

What gets me more excited is hearing Doom. His voice is so grimy and bully-esque. Love his delivery and his lyrics will put most of the others to shame.

This track really jumps off and not surprisingly, it is produced by Oh No. The music is okay and there's a catchy hook, but it's the Ghostface/Doom tag team that distinguishes this one from all the rest. It's only three and a half minutes long and I wish it was just a bit longer.

Get ya game on hip hoppers, and your groove on too. kfox.

Ghostface Killah: Hip Hop for Valentine's Day

This is a quickie because it is a bit late. Just found this and since I am a fan of Ghostface Killah and the list is both interesting and has some humor ... I thought I'd share.

Bavu's Got the Flow ...

Bavu Blakes is shakin it up. Doin something different. Sure many artists can pump out a cd of say 12-14 tracks every other year. Some can do a little better - try Ghostface Killah who did his thing w/the terror that was "Fishscale" in March '06 then turned right back around and released "More Fish" in December of that same year. Love that.

Now Blakes is uppin the ante. He is droppin a track per week for every week in '08. He calls it "'08 So Great :: a new flow every week". Love that too.

Get w/it hip hoppers. I know how much you like freebies.

The New-ness

Some new stuff is on my block.

Mos Def
"True Magic"
  • Good stuff; true to his game, but does not venture off and explore much new terrain though I like the title track; it's not like "Danger" and lots of folk did not like that; but can someone tell me what is up w/the packaging on this disc - or the lack of it? Yeah, it was in a clear plastic case w/the disc and that is it...no cover art, no liner notes. The tracks are listed on the disk and that is it; that is so booty ... There should be a discount for that ...
Om: Hip-Hop V. 1
  • What's not like about Om Records? And this project is meaty - Zion I, Colossus, Crown City Rockers ... instead of Om, it should be 'ummmm' (hope that's not too corny ... )

Macromantics
"Moments in Movement

  • The age of the white girl rapper has arrived; but this joint is really nice; there's just a different atmosphere on this; the flow is unpredictable, the beats are strong and on point
Bunny Rabbit
"Lovers and Crypts"
  • This one I have not listened to yet; my copy is supposed to be clean and it damn well better be, because with titles like "Pussy Queen" and "Saddle Up", it'll never get any airplay where I'm at

I finally located my "More Fish" from Ghostface ... that's the one to get.

I'll try to hit on the Grammy's before the week is out ... if you can't wait for the hip hop version, check out my other blog for the overall recap ... I'm out hip hoppers ... do dat &*$#@, kfox

2006 ... a brief recap

Well ... this seems a bit premature, but CMJ's deadline for the best of 2006 was this past Friday.

I primarily culled this off the top of my head, but I thought it would be best to revisit the archives and not soley employ my selective memory.

Generally speaking, 2006 was a fine year for hip hop. I'll elaborate in another post closer to the end of the year.

Here is the WMCO Top 10 Hip Hop albums/cds for 2006:

#1 THE ROOTS "Game Theory"
#2 GHOSTFACE KILLAH "Fish Scale"
#3 PSYCHE ORIGAMI "The Standard"
#4 OH NO "Exodus into Unheard Rhythms"
#5 PIGEON JOHN "...And the Summertime Pool Party"
#6 P.O.S. "Audition"
#7 J DILLA "The Shining"
#8 SERGIO MENDES "Timeless"
#9 COLLECTIVE EFFORTS "Medicine"
#10 WAX TAILOR "Tales of the Forgotten Melodies"

Let me know what you think ... stay true, kfox
