I've been a fan of WEFUNK Radio for years. The guys out of Montreal know how to string together some good music and then next thing you know you've lost two hours of your life - AND it's all good.

From the title of the show, you know that you're going to get a dose of funk, but they weave in lots of hip hop, rare grooves and (excuse me for the cliche) the dopest lyricists ever! The show is consistently solid and always introducing me to someone new.

Today's newness comes from d.i.t.c. (about 1 hour and 27 seconds into the show) Whoa!! Where have I been? Or where have they been? Loved hearing "Day One" from 2000. The hard and crafty rhymes just keep flowin. Love that.

But really the focus on Gil Scott-Heron on this show is killer. You have to hear it for yourself. Oh, and the Rakim interview clips about James Brown are so enlightening and very cool.

So hip hoppers, set aside two hours to get nothing done, but you'll be dancing your ass off and nodding your head. For real. kfox.

It's a New Year - Let's Get Funky

Happy New Year! Welcome 2009! I am lovin it already.

The first thing I'm going to do in this new year is to point you to We Funk Radio - again. I've blogged about them in the past, but what they do can never be championed enough. I have been diggin these guys for years. They are very cool, indeed. This is where I get my hip hop fix infused w/rare soul and old school jams. I'm talking Johnny Guitar Watson, Sly Stone, James Brown, George Duke and many more unknowns.

Here's what's to like about listening to We Funk Radio. They are out of CKUT in Montreal. But their webbie is incredible. Not only can you listen to the steam, but you can check out their deep archives. My fav We Funk Radio show is one where they kick down some JB to start the show off and then they wrap it up w/some Johnny Guitar Watson and Rick James. Of course, there's new and old hip hop all up in there too.

They even go a step further in the archives, by providing track listings. Now that is a big deal to me because nearly every time I listen to a show, I say to myself "Who is that?". But there is even another level to the track listings. Professor Groove and dj Static have created a Learn&Own section and all you have to do is click on the artists name for more information. Very cool, indeed.

Just know that CKUT is a community radio station and they will kindly accept your donations (especially bandwidth donations).

Goin Global

I'm always trolling the web for new and cool stuff. I often stuff across non-American hip hop in my surfing ventures.

I've been a fan of WeFunkRadio for years - those guys are based out of Montreal, Canada and they know how to bring it. I really like their webbie because they have an extensive archive and there are track listings for nearly every show.

But I've also been checking out the BBC's 1xtra for quite a while now. Initially, I stumbled upon the wealth of hip hop shows that they have to offer, but they also have a section on hip hop documentaries that is exceptional.

So now, I see that they are unleashing some free downloads of unsigned UK artists - the UK Music Podcast. How cool is that? Sometimes I think they're behind in terms of music that is hot for us, other times it takes us forever to pick up on their artists.

So give it a go ... it's FREE for goodness sake ... I'm doin the work for ya hip hoppers, kfox.

We Funk Radio

Several years ago I discovered We Funk Radio. It's a ultra cool and slick hip hop and rare soul radio show out of Montreal. The Canadians have this show on lock and it is quite refreshing. I often forget that We Funk Radio is a radio show because north of the border they can air profanity on the airwaves.

What's so cool about this gig? The guys know their stuff. When they pull out the rare soul it is not your mother's records. Heck no. It is your mama's, mama's records. They dust off tracks like the Honeydrippers, Fatback, Lyn Collins and then they manage to mix in the old school hip hop and not just the mainstream classics, but the b-sides as well. Finally, they add the flava of the Canadian tundra!

Oh, the show is on CKUT, a community radio station and is hosted by Professor Groove and and DJ Static.

You've got to check out the webbie. The archive is extensive with lots of options for listening. But seriously, for each and every archive (at least all the ones I've checked out) they provide track listings! Talk about paying attention to details.
